Sole proprietors and family businesses start small and are relatively easy to manage until two things happen: they begin to employ people and their revenues exceed $1 million a year. In order to grow, successful business owners utilize professional outside consulting just as they also retain legal and accounting services. Two excellent resources are available at no cost to begin: SCORE— the Service Corps of Retired Executives and  SBDC— Small Business Development Councils sponsored by the Small Business Administration.

Memberships to the Chamber of Commerce or Better Business Bureau cost money and may serve an advertising function, but cannot replace the functionality of professional business consulting.
